I have spent the last two Sunday mornings jump squatting, burpeeing, pushing up and generally breaking a sweat on Clapham Common. I’ve been taking part in the Nike+ Training Club events that are going on all over London so whether you’re a South West fitness freak like me, or a Fitster Hipster over in East London there is an event for you. These events are all totally free, led by professional trainers and incorporate bodyweight exercises, circuit training and flashes of cardio. They’re a great way to get out of the gym, have fun, and walk away knowing that you’ve done a proper workout that you can feel really good about.
Really importantly for me they’re also very sociable. I’ve ended up speaking to some amazing girls who are all there to celebrate feeling good and feeling strong, rather than complain about body image or feel bad about themselves. Less bootcamp more booty-camp.
If you’re training for the Nike Women’s 10k like I am, or just want to shake up your gym routine then I couldn’t recommend going along more. It’s really easy to sign up – just visit this link and reserve your spot.
Over in Clapham we are led by the wonderful Hattie Grover!
She’s a trainer who loves to move through dancing, and although the workout is definitely high energy it’s very high spirits. Hattie runs around shouting out encouragement with a stopwatch in hand, whilst we get down to business!
One of my favourite things about the workouts is how different they are to what you would do in the gym or by yourself. In a gym you do a tricep dip, but with NTC we do tricep dip trains!
The workouts vary from week to week, and will include anything from circuits to pair work. With no equipment involved the work comes from using your own bodyweight, and is a really refreshing addition to your routine if you’re used to just counting reps in the gym or miles on the road. Another great thing about this means that the workouts are very accessible – if you’re a gym bunny who can crack out more push ups than a royal marine then the structure of the session means you can do that, but if you’re not feeling quite like Arnie then equally you can still do a good workout with the moves that suits your body and your fitness.
Nike+ Training Clubs want you to get lean, toned and strong, and whilst it’s the amazing, dynamic and totally different workouts that will get you that way – it’s the fun and sociability that will keep you going back!
What is it?
The Nike+ Training Club events are a series of classes in locations around London that use your own body weight to help you build strength for a body that looks good and can do lots.
Where is it?
All over London! Some are based in Nike stores and others are based in outdoor spaces. I attend the one at Clapham Common.
How do I get involved?
Visit the sign up page and simply reserve your spot.
What does it cost?
It’s free so you really do have nothing to lose.
What should I wear?
It’s no shock that my favourite look for this workout comes from Nike!
I love to wear my Nike Pro Capri Pants as I feel really confident that they will stay up and stay in place no matter how many drop squats I do.
I use my Nike Zoom Vomero 10 shoes as they offer a lot of support for high impact exercises – something that is really important for protecting your knees, ankles and shins – whilst allowing me the flexbility to move around quickly.
You will need to wear a supportive sports bra, and I prefer a vest style top so that I can feel free to move and sweat with ease. My Nike looks come from JD Sports – check them out as new kit can often be a great motivation to go for a workout!
Do remember that you might be outside so don’t forget a hoody to warm up in if it’s cold or raining!
